Battle of sexes moves to the golf course

Every now and then, I find myself thinking that golf in Bermuda will be okay. While there is much to be concerned about, there is always someone willing to step up to the plate and do something creative.

That someone is currently George Corday. He is famous for many things. He has had five holes-in-one in his golf career, the most recent at Belmont’s short but devilish fourth hole. George has saved par on three other occasions by holing out his provisional ball on par threes.

George is also famous for his ability to win money pretty much every time he plays golf. Some say it is because his USGA handicap has been miscalculated — but I’m sure it is accurate and he is simply a fine golfer.

With these achievements, George could have retired from golf quite satisfied with himself.

But he has created a new tournament to be played at his home course, Belmont Hills, on Sunday.

The format could put his life in danger. George has put together the Gender Challenge and hopes it will become an annual event on the Bermuda golf calendar.

It should be quite competitive and will certainly be a lot of fun.

The first Gender Challenge will see a team of about 20 men competing against a team of 20 women using the usual two against two format for 20 points per match.

While there will be 20 points at stake in each match, there will also be an enormous amount of bragging rights available to the winners.

This event has an enormous amount of potential sparkle, together with the opportunity for all sorts of trash talk between the participants.

George is confident the men will win most matches by a clear margin.

But he is recommending they be sure to act like gentlemen when reporting their winning margins.

George is also working on identifying a suitable task for the losing team to carry out for the winners.

He has thrown out cleaning golf clubs and shoes and is hoping to find a more meaningful task. Please let George know your ideas on this.

In creating the Gender Challenge, George is opening the door to any number of spats between the sexes. Legal bills associated with this event should be marked for his attention.
