Augustus: It was a great performance

Daniel Augustus produced one of his better performances of the year to add another Jack Daniel’s Tour title to his growing collection.

The 23-year-old pro shot a one over par 72 at Port Royal earlier this week to finish four shots ahead of nearest rival Dwayne Pearman.

He carded four birdies and hit 15 holes in regulation in blustery conditions.

The only significant blemish on Augustus’ copybook was a triple bogey at the scenic par three 16th, which virtually put paid to any hopes of entering the clubhouse under par.

“I thought I would be alright hitting to the right as the wind was blowing from right to left… but I guess it was just one of those things,” the affable golfer smiled.

Augustus also bogeyed the eighth and 18th holes. But even that failed to put a damper on his day.

“It was a pretty good performance… I just had a couple of bad holes really. Overall it was a pretty good performance on a really tough day,” he said.

“Port Royal is a well-designed and very difficult golf course and it gusts up there. There were also some tough pin positions out there.

“I was rolling the ball pretty good and was quite happy about that. Obviously whenever you are putting well your scores are going to be better.”

While Augustus may have had his moments with the putter, he was virtually flawless driving off the tee.

“My ball striking from fairway to green was awesome that day,” he stressed. “I couldn’t even pick anything bad about what I did from fairway to green — it was a great performance.”

Although he has some ground to make up for the overall Jack Daniel’s title, Augustus hasn’t ruled himself out of contention for top honours come season’s end.

“I believe I have an outside chance and anything is possible. I just have to put my head down and try and win every week pretty much.” n
