Artist apologises for mistreatment by her ancestors as part of show

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23: Artist and international trust lawyer Monica Jones will focus on apologising for the past and looking to the future in her upcoming participation in Chewstick’s Reasnin’ Series.

Her most recent foray into the world of art was to apologise for the oppression, pain and suffering, racial discrimination and oppression of women that many of her ancestors would have participated in.

Under her studies with Sharon Wilson, her artistic goal as a painter is to show how possible it is to grow and change as well as to provide a way of apologizing for the past, and to show all Bermudians (and in fact all people) that they have a power and potential that is far greater than they could ever imagine.

She will share her experiences of being one of the first women in her family to pursue a career outside of the home and will shed light on her personal experience of white privilege. 

The Reasnin’ series is free, but donations toward the Chewstick Foundation’s programmes and infrastructure are welcomed. The event takes place at the Chewstick headquarters on Tuesday, November 29. The Reasnin’ Series are routinely held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Chewstick Headquarters on the corner of Court Street and Elliott Street. Talks start at 6pm and questions and general discussion take place immediately following.
