FRIDAY, JAN. 20: Bermuda Restaurant Week is upon us and there are tons of delectable deals waiting to be taken advantage of. There are three pricing categories for three course meals at participating restaurants, the cheapest is $29 then $39 then $49. We will be reviewing a selection of restaurants from each category to whet your appetite. Restaurant Week runs until February 6.

The Waterlot Inn / Top price range

By Sarah Lagan

  • The Waterlot Inn —  $49 category:

Restaurant reviewers normally work their way through the courses as they were tasted but I’m cutting to the chase — the Waterlot’s sticky toffee pudding is to die for. The sponge is fantastic but my favourite part about it was mixing the home made toffee sauce with the vanilla ice cream to make sheer heaven.

So back to course one— the onion soup in veal broth. It was bursting with flavour and I liked it that way, certainly one of the better onion soups I have tried (and I have had dissapointing onion soup even in some of the most respected establishments on the island). The only thing I would say about this one was there was no need for all the cheese, there was one big clump of melted cheese that I kept having to avoid to get to the delicious soup.

The chopped salad alternative was good enough, finely chopped cucumber, apple, egg. It came with a small stack of onion rings which could have done with some seasoning or something to perk up the flavour.

On to the second course, the filet mignon was cooked to perfection, juicy and slightly crisp on the outside.

The rockfish alternative was lightly cooked, moist with a delicate hint of lemon. The Ashley Farm chicken was coated in a delicious seasoning and all these second course meals are accompanied by moreish buttermilk mashed potatoes and creamed spinach.

Finally the other desert was the creamy New York cheescake with maceriated strawberries was light, fluffy and a worthy second place to that sticky toffee pudding.

Barracuda grill / Top price range

By Mikaela Ian Pearman

  • Barracuda Grill —  $49 category:

The food at Barracuda Grill is always spectacular and I was expecting no less when I sampled their Restaurant Week menu.

Until February 6, diners can have three course dinners at the restaurant for just $49.

I figured the food would be fantastic, but the portions would be small.

Oh, was I wrong.

I started with candied salmon risotto, which was topped with saffron vermouth cream and taro chips. Amazing flavour from the very first bite.

For my second course, I had beef short ribs with crispy bacon polenta, grilled vegetables and foie gras demi glace.

The meat was so tender that I didn’t even need a knife.

Again, another dish filled with maximum flavour.

I had the wine pairing with this dish, which was Cabernet Sauvignon.

Finally for dessert, I opted for cinnamon poached pear with date crumble and salted butter ice cream.

I also had the wine pairing, Tokaji.

It was outstanding, the best course by far, but maybe that’s because I’m a dessert person.

All in all, the menu was wonderful and for the price, it’s a must go. I’ll be back next week.

Other appetisers on the menu included kobe beef ravioli with roasted pepper truffle foam and red wine demi glace; Asian hot pot seafood wonton, chili coconut drizzle and julienne vegetables.

The other entrées were local rock fish cake with pumpkin mash, almond banana jam and shallot asparagus; pork tenderloin Moroccan spiced with warm couscous salada, kiwi raita and cashew brittle.

Finally the other dessert is baked cheesecake with berry compote.

It’s an original and eclectic menu I would say.
