Four galleries join forces to ‘Keep Bermuda Art Alive’

Four major art galleries have joined together in an effort to Keep Bermuda Art Alive.

The Bermuda National Gallery, Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, The Bermuda Society of Arts and the Arts Centre at Dockyard they are due to host a collaborative art tag day this Friday in the City of Hamilton with the hope of generating support.

Heidi Cowen of the Arts Centre at Dockyard said: “Art is an important part of the island’s heritage and many of the art galleries on the island are in need of support. As our motto is Keeping Bermuda Art Alive, we approached the other galleries with the idea of a joint tag day.”

Elise Outerbridger, Masterworks curator added: “This is a terrific opportunity to work together and share our common goals and ambitions.”

To further the recognition of art in our community, the organizations have also planned an Art Appreciation Day where various forms of art will be featured throughout the City of Hamilton on the same day.

Here is a list of creative events taking place on the day:

• The PleinArt Group of Bermuda has been invited to paint in Queen Elizabeth Park (formerly Par-le-Ville) from 9am to 4pm.
• There will be a quick draw at City Hall – resulting works will be displayed at BSoA.
• Masterworks’ Artist in Residence, Jennifer Lawson, will be painting at City Hall.
• Bobby Barritt will be signing and selling posters of his artwork given to the Bermuda National Trust at the front of City Hall, donating proceeds towards the event. The artworks are entitled Theatre Boycott Upstairs, Right (1959) and Two Weeks Before Christmas and Government House (1960).
• Also, photographers and interviewers will be interviewing people about Keeping Art Alive in Bermuda.

This year marks the 60th anniversary for the Bermuda Society of Arts. Assistant gallery director Nzingha Ming said: “We have many events planned for the year. The Keeping Bermuda Art Alive initiative displays the unity needed in the local arts community. Working alongside the other arts entities has always been one of our aims and we hope this event will grow in the future.

BNG gallery director Lisa Howie added: “Collaboration is one of the Bermuda National Gallery’s core values so this tage day is a perfect fit. It is an excellent opportunity to share our collaborative spirit.”

The organizations hope this first annual tag day will lead to future collaborations. All are invited to venture out and enjoy the activities.
