Let me introduce my unsung hero
This week’s column is about my hero.
It is about someone that has encouraged me to be the best I can.
It is about a hero that has guided me in the right direction, one that knows what sacrifice means and recognizes its value in the end.
My hero has no wings but knows how to fly, my hero has been on a journey of learning for many years and has helped many others step out of the box to find their own paths to success.
My hero can not lift up cars nor stop moving trains, but has carried the weight of many others’ problems and dreams on his shoulders.
He goes to no end when helping someone in need and will give you all he can to see you prosper.
My hero does not hide behind a mask.
He surely lets you know when he is coming and makes sure you are aware that you are getting the real person when he is in front of you.
My hero is not in the newspapers all over the world for accomplishing great things, but is in the lives of many, accomplishing those little things that mean the world.
My hero was not born with special super powers, but is as human as can be, with a special heart that touches all that he connects with.
My hero never asks for acknowledgment nor wants to be noticed, just a little thank you is enough for him.
Who is my hero you may ask, who is this person behind my words?
Well, he is my father, Herbert Eugene Bascome is his name.
I say thank you
He is a man that has protected and looked out for not only his kids but many others.
If it was not for him, I would have never been able to accomplish the goals I have in soccer and life.
There are too many good fathers out there that get the short end of the stick and get no acknowledgement due to many others not taking care of their own kids.
So, to my father and other fathers out there that are putting in the time and hard work protecting their kids and giving them the tools needed for the world today, I say thank you and congratulations on your success of raising and preparing your special young people for the future.
Let’s us all remember: what we leave behind in our journey is as important as to what we move towards in our future.
Until next time!
David Bascome is a former international footballer and current coach at Baltimore Blast. He is also the founder of the Hope4Life Foundation.
