1. Did Chris Brown ditch bodyguard in Bermuda?
American bad boy Chris Brown allegedly got into an altercation with his bodyguard on a pit stop to Bermuda. Brown arrived in Bermuda on board a private plane, which stopped here to re-fuel. His bodyguard never got back the plane and made alternative arrangements to fly back to New York on JetBlue.
The Bermuda Sun’s Mikaela Ian Pearman broke this story and it was picked up by other media outlets all over the world.
2. Tragedy hits Island Games
Two Faroe Islands badminton officials were killed in a car accident on their way home from the Bermuda Island Games.
James Burton reported Hogni Carlsson and Vilhjalmur Gregoriussen were travelling in a hire taxi after the team had landed back in Faroe via private charter.
3. ‘Our love for you will never fade’
James and Pauline Watlington told the Bermuda Sun they had been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support they had received in the wake of their daughter Charlotte’s death.
Simon Jones reported that the 34-year-old died earlier this year in Boston where she had been receiving medical treatment for the last year.
4. ‘I can’t believe he’s gone’
The devastated wife of a ‘devoted family man’ spoke of her unimaginable sense of loss after the tragic death of her husband. Gareth Hendrickson died suddenly on a Saturday night in July, just a day after he had been discharged from hospital for treatment to a blood clot on the lung.
His wife, Tricia, described the 39-year-old father of their three young boys, Malcolm, Nicholas and Christopher, as her ‘rock’.
Dishevelled, dirty and disorientated — Frankie Simmons was a familiar figure in the back of town where he wandered the streets for years pushing a grocery cart full of rusting and rotting memorabilia.
But behind the tattered shoes and the motorbike sprocket and assorted ornaments that hung around his neck lay glimpses of a past life.
It was a life that saw him proudly raise a family, attend his daughter’s secondary school graduation in a smart blue suit, work his way up the ranks at the Pink Beach Club and even have his artwork put on public display.
His past life intrigued readers who had only witnessed his eccentric meanderings since mental illness took hold more than two decades ago.
6. Family hit by ‘wave of grief’’
A grieving family was hit by the devastating triple heartbreak of losing a mother, a father and a son all in the same year. Lorrie Bennett-Bean passed away earlier this month in hospital at the age of 47 after a brave battle against cancer. But her death came just months after she had buried her husband, Millard Bean — who dies in an industrial accident —, as well as her young son, Torrie Baker, who died from a bike accident.
7. Bermuda joins Harlem Shake Internet craze
The Bermuda flag was flying high at Jobson’s Cove as Facebook group BerMemes pulled off the first ever Harlem Shake on the island.
Our Sarah Lagan was there as the group organized the shoot which featured locals sporting their craziest outfits and props to stage a version of a dance which had become the latest Internet craze.
8. Car targeted: Who did it?
A woman at the centre of controversy over offensive Facebook messages said she has had her car vandalized.
The 24-year-old Hamilton woman said the words ‘whore’ and ‘b**ch’ were scratched into the paintwork of her car in July. Police declined to comment about the incident. The insulting Facebook messages appeared to come from OBA MP Nandi Outerbridge but she denied sending them and said her Facebook account was hacked.
9. Your Facebook privacy settings need checking
Around the time Nandi Davis said her Facebook page was hacked, the social media giant started rolled out its new graph search, which made people’s profiles more public and less private.
10. ‘Judge Greaves should be disbarred’
A mother-of-two has criticized a judge for ‘ridiculing’ and ‘revictimising’ her in his sentencing remarks. Chrissie Kempe told the Bermuda Sun Judge Carlisle Greaves should be disbarred for comments made about her during the sentencing of her ex-husband, Irving Butterfield.
Butterfield was given a suspended sentence after he admitted stabbing co-worker and friend, Damian Forbes, for kissing Ms Kempe in her home, over a year after Butterfield and Ms Kempe had separated.
