Appleby donates hampers to STAR

Six families will have a brighter Christmas this year thanks to Appleby Bermuda.

The firm presented food hampers and gifts to local charity Supportive Therapy for Aids Persons and their Relatives (STAR) during the lead up to the holidays.  

STAR has provided financial, physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual support for over 27 Year’s to persons with HIV and their families.  

The Partners and staff annually support six STAR families during the holiday season, supplying hampers consisting of turkey and all the trimmings, farine pie and ham, as well as fruit baskets and Christmas trees delivered to the families’ homes. In addition, Appleby staff purchased presents including toys, gift vouchers, clothing and toiletries.

STAR Live-in Supervisor and Coordinator Ruth Skinner was on hand to receive the donated items. 

Bermuda managing partner Kiernan Bell said: “We’ve worked closely with STAR during the holiday season since 1998. Our hope is to bring more joy and comfort to the six families during this time of year.

“I’m grateful to our staff that kindly donated and to those who also served as volunteers coordinating the efforts to make this all happen. In particular, I’d like to recognise Verna Cann, Jennifer Bean, Juanette Spencer, Kristen Swan, Susana Sousa, Sherma Webb Clarke, Penny Pfenning, Chandra Mungal, Keona Bennett, Tina Nusum, Thalia Lightbourne and Calvin Steede for their help with this year’s initiative.”

STAR’s work in the Bermuda community has benefited more than 170 people at its Light House facility, which aims to provide a family environment for 47 residents, including men, women and children. The charity also offers support throughout the island to persons living with HIV by way of confidential counselling and personal caregivers visiting homes, the hospital and hospices.
