Tips for a safe Christmas

The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service wants to ensure that all residents has the best Christmas possible.

In an effort to make sure that there are no unintended fires, the Service has provided the following Christmas tree fire safety tips for the holidays:

• Make sure the Christmas tree is at least three feet away from any heat source such as fireplaces, space heaters, candles, heat vents or lights.

• Make sure the Christmas tree is not blocking any exits.

• Keep small children away from Christmas trees to prevent  accidents.

• Add water to the Christmas tree on a daily basis.

• Some lights are specifically for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.  Make sure the lights are used for their correct purpose.

• Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. 

• Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of LED strands that can be connected.

• Never use lit candles to decorate a Christmas tree.

• Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving your home or when going to bed.

• Get rid of the tree when it begins dropping needles. Dried-out Christmas trees are a fire hazard and should not be left in your home or garage.

Note: Government will advertise when Christmas tree pick-up days are after the holidays.
