The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs recently held a book launch and reception for Bermudian Folk Remedies-Using Medical Botanicals for Common Ailments by newly published author Dr. Kuni Frith-Black.
Folk medicine books exist in most other countries, but this is the first of its kind to be published here in Bermuda. Dr. Frith-Black’s colourful 123-page book offers a wealth of information on local plants and their medicinal uses. The book incorporates Dr. Frith-Black’s academic background on herbal healing and features remedies and treatment using Bermuda’s plants and herbs. It also features stories about herbal remedies by Bermudian elders and natural skin and hair care treatments.
The Minister of Community, Culture and Sports the Hon. R. Wayne Scott, JP MP said in his opening remarks, “As we know, folk remedies have always been part of the Bermudian culture. These remedies have been passed on from generation to generation. I am sure most of us can remember at least one remedy that our grandparents or even great-grandparent used to treat all sorts of aliments and illness. This book gives a glimpse into our Bermudian past, painting a portrait of one of our island home’s unique tradition – folk medicine.”
Minister Scott praised Dr Frith-Black for her determination and commitment to keep Bermudian folk medicine alive. He also thanked Folklife Officer Dr. Kim Dismont Robinson and Department of Communication’s, Ashley Lusher (photographer) and Suzette Sailsman (graphic designer) for their work in developing the book.
Bermudian Folk Remedies is part of the Folklife series of books and DVDs available from December 13 at local bookstores or at the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs. Books can be ordered online at www.communityandculture.bm
The book is published by Island Press, a sister company to the Bermuda Sun.
