Nova brings star appeal to benefit show
Singer/songwriter Heather Nova will join a host of talented singers and musicians during the Live Bda Philippines Relief Fund concert tomorrow night.
She last performed in Bermuda at the Lennon Peace Day concert in September and sang some impromptu songs at The Big Chill events over the summer, organized by her husband Felix Tod.
Her last solo concert was in 2011 at the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts but she promised that another full-length concert on home turf is certainly on the cards.
We caught up with her ahead of tomorrow’s event.
Why did you think this was an important event to perform at?
(Cordinator) Andrew Chamberlain called to ask if I would be interested and I immediately said yes.
Times like these, when there’s a chance for everyone to come together and send support to people needing it, are important. Music is a great way to bring people together to raise money.
Like everyone, I have been thinking a lot of the people in the Philippines and it’s nice to be able to contribute to their relief in some small way.
I hope everyone will come out and support this and have a good time in doing so. Bermuda is a beautiful caring community and as there are so many Filipinos here I think there is a natural inclination to reach out to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in whatever way we can.
What keeps you living in Bermuda?
We came back here to live when we had our son in 2004. I wanted him to grow up in Bermuda — swimming, building treehouses, exploring the mangroves and the rockpools; developing that natural connection to nature.
There is magic to a Bermuda childhood that is invaluable and stays with you for life.
What have you been working on lately?
I have been doing a lot of writing this year. I find Bermuda is a great place to write. I have a lot of material now, and am looking into who to record it with and what kind of sound I want on this next album.
Tell us about your upcoming tour.
I am doing 37 dates in February and March in Europe. It’s a long one, but I really look forward to it. I love feeling the connection that my music is making with people. That’s what it’s all about.
Do you plan any more concerts in Bermuda?
I would like to come back and do a concert in Bermuda in 2014.
Just figuring out where and when. I’ll keep you posted!
