This years’ Sand Sculpting Competition on Horsehoe Bay was a great success with picture perfect weather, and crowds of visitors and locals swarming the beach.

With nearly twenty teams competing in a race to build the best sand sculpture, the atmosphere was lively, as Bermuda’s Labor Day weekend kicked off!

Everyone came to take advantage of the last ‘official’ days of summer while supporting family members and friends entered in the competition.

Starting at ten o’clock this morning, the teams were given 6 hours to complete their elaborate sand structures, with each one representing a specific theme.

First time competitors Michael Walsh, Necheeka Trott and Caitlin Barnard from the Bermuda College ‘Arts & Design Programme’ created a life-sized Polaroid Camera. The team was very excited for the opportunity to compete, having just finished their last year of college.

The sculpture was designed to represent their memories of school, which Caitlin later gushed, “This was such a great experience!”

Defending Champions Hannah Strong, Erika Mattatall and Gordon Emerson dedicated their sand sculpture to the Lionfish Tournament and the efforts of the BIO Station to eradicate this very invasive species.

There were many other competitors who also chose to celebrate Bermuda’s wildlife by building detailed Humpback Whales, a "cheeky" Tree Frog, a fish, local fruits and the Skink.

Other entries included themes of Religion, Bermuda "More" Tourism, John Lennon... and Rum!
