A Bermuda singer has recorded a song in support of a cat charity – and it may be picked up internationally.

Val Sherwood’s Be Fabulous, the title song of her new album, is a tribute to the work of the Bermuda Feline Assistance Bureau (BFAB).

She said: “The International Society for Animal Rights has taken an interest in the song and they may use it in future campaigns.”

Ms Sherwood was speaking as she manned a stall in Washington Mall to mark international Homeless Animals Day, which remembers stray and abandoned animals, many of which are put down because they cannot be rehomed.

She added that a declining population in Bermuda meant it was harder to find new homes for strays – although she stressed BFAB does not put down animals unless it was medically necessary.

And she said: “There are also a large number of dogs put to sleep in Bermuda on a regular basis because there aren’t enough homes for them.”

A spokeswoman for BFAB said: “It’s been amazing – we’ve had lots of people stop and lots of young people.”

She added that they hoped to stage a candlelit vigil next year to remember animals which have had to be put to sleep, in line with international practice.

BFAB is also running a poster competition for youngsters aged between 6 and 17 on the importance of neutering cats as part of its 21st anniversary celebration.

The deadline for the competition, which has an entry fee of a bag of Whiskas dry cat food, is Wednesday, August 28. Entries can be dropped of at Dunkley’s on Devonshire’s Vesey Street or on August 28 only at the Bermuda Society of Arts, City Hall, Hamilton.

The minimum poster size is 8.5in by 11in and the maximum is 24in by 36in.

Entries will go on display as part of a BFAB art show on Friday, August 30 at the Bermuda Society of Arts.
