Explore with AppBermuda
An app focused on all things Bermuda is now available for iPhone and iPad users.
AppBermuda was launched earlier this summer at the iTunes Store and has become popular amongst both tourists and Bermudians.
The mobile travel guide showcases Bermuda in more than 1,000 pages and features many categories including beaches, dining, attractions, activities, places of worship and so much more.
And a data plan or wifi isn’t necessary to run it, meaning tourists can use the app on their phones or iPads and not worry about heavy roaming charges when they return.
Samantha Tavares, spokesperson for AppBermuda said the product is a culmination of a years work by her family including Toni Johnson, Scott Johnson and Betty Brown, and the goal is to give tourists and Bermudians everything you could want to know about Bermuda in one app.
“The idea came from my mom. She downloaded the Bermuda app and thought it would be cool if we made something.
“I was unemployed for a little while so it was one of these ‘let’s just try it’.
“We have all contributed towards it.”
Ms Tavares said the app is constantly being updated and hopes businesses around the island will download it to see if they are featured.
“If they’re not in it, they need to be, especially small businesses. There’s no charge to contact us and update their pages.”
Asked about the feedback, Ms Tavares said: “It’s been great. I have been really happy with it.
“People have been really impressed. It’s really an app that teaches people about the island.
“We learned so much making it. You can have lived here your whole life and not have been to a particular place.”
Ms Tavares said the unique thing about the app is it will take tourists a bit off the beaten path.
“Tourists can find Pickled Onion or Flannagan’s on any flyer anywhere.
“But what do you see to go to Art Mel’s or where to take your kid to the playground?”
Ms Tavares said those things can be found within AppBermuda.
There are more than 700 photographs feature on the app with some photography by her father, James Tavares of Captured Memories Photography.
One cool thing about the app is the map feature, which works like a mobile GPS device, showing you exactly where you are and how to get where you want to go.
There are two versions of the app, one for the iPhone and one for the iPad.
Ms Tavares said if everything goes well, they will expand to Androids.
AppBermuda is available at the iTunes store on Reid Street or by visiting www.appbermuda.bm
