Mirrors Bowling Tournament raises $6k

The Minister of Community, Culture and Sports, the Hon. R. Wayne Scott, JP, MP is pleased to announce that the Cohort 8 participants of the Mirrors Programme successfully completed their community service project to raise funds for two local charities – Feed My Lambs Ministry (Charity #863) and New Beginnings Education Trust (Charity #864).  

 Each cohort, as a part of their participation in the Mirrors Programme, is responsible for developing and implementing a community service project.  Cohort 8 came up with a Bowling Tournament as they wanted to give back to other young people in the area of education. 

As such, they decided to provide the funding to the New Beginnings Education Trust to give back to youth locally and Feed My Lambs Ministry to support the school building project in Haiti. 

This group of young people explored three different projects, worked through a selection process for choosing the event and heard presentations from different charities before determining the organizations to be recipients of the fundraising effort. The team of volunteers and young adults gained invaluable experience in project development. 

The group worked hard to pull together this event and their hard work paid off. Cohort 8 managed to raise $6,320.00 as charitable funds for donation to Feed My Lambs Ministry and New Beginnings Education Trust.

The 1st Annual Bowling Tournament took place on Saturday, July 20th, 2013 at Strykz Bowling Lounge in St. David’s under the lead sponsorship of Bermuda Healthcare Services and Brown-Darrell Clinic. 

Kimberley Jackson, Programme Coordinator for Mirrors said, “It is always a pleasure and rewarding to see what youth can accomplish when they have the support of their community behind them.  You always know that you are doing a great thing when young people make the decision to give back.  For these young people to make the choice to give specifically to the development of others in education speaks to the impact of their involvement with the Mirrors Programme.”

One of the lane sponsors for the event was Butterfield & Vallis. Team sponsors included The English Sports Shop, BF&M Insurance, D & J Construction, Caesar’s Pharmacy, Island Health Services, Tops Ltd., Bermuda Financial Network, City of Hamilton and one anonymous sponsor.

In addition to sponsors for the event, there were also organizations and individuals who made donations of prizes for the teams that participated in the event.  Donors of prizes include Fairmont Hamilton, Fairmont Southampton, Arnold’s Markets, Barritt’s, Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo, E & B Trading, Ink Virgin, Island Cuisine, Lil Rups, Brown & Co., Market Place and The Reefs.

Minister Scott wishes to thank all sponsors for their contributions in support of worthwhile charitable causes while at the same time assisting young people to complete a community service project as part of their Mirrors Programme experience.
