Two Bermudian models have spoken of their delight after being selected by a top international model agency Elite for a possible spot at London Fashion Week.
The two girls, Rayneisha Bean and Sophie Adams, were spotted by London scout Leah Hibbert after they took part in Bermuda’s Evolution Fashion show last month. They could see themselves walking the runway at the prestigious event if they are successful. Both girls live in London and are due for the casting in the coming days. London Fashion Week takes place from September 13 to 17.
Adams has been studying Science at Kingston University since 2011.
Bean moved to London in October of 2010 to further her education and will be graduating in November with a Bachelors in Business and Finance.
Here’s what they had to say:
What was your initial reaction to getting chosen by Elite for another casting?
SA: I was initially really surprised because out of all the amazing models I didn’t expect to be picked.
However I was extremely excited because it’s something I’ve always dreamt about. Although we have not yet been guaranteed a spot in London Fashion Week, we are using this incredible opportunity to prepare ourselves in the hope that we are included in the show.
RB: My initial reaction to being selected for recasting was shock and excitement since Elite is such a huge, prestigious agency and has offices in many countries. It has also started the careers of many successful models who I admire. So possibly being placed with them is, as cliche as it sounds, a dream come true.
Tell me about your modeling experience so far?
SA: I first started modeling in 2010 when I did a commercial for Digicel Bermuda. My first photo shoot was in 2011 for Style Bermuda.
I was a part of Stefanel’s swim suit fashion show in 2010, and the Evolution fashion show this year.
RB: I have been modelling locally since I was 16.
My first fashion show was the Duchess & Dukes of the Runway in 2009 and I did the fashion show again in 2010. I did the Evolution fashion shows in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and also the A-la-mode Fashion Show in London during London fashion week in September 2011.
What has been your
secret to your success?
SA: I wouldn’t call it a secret but I am a lifeguard during the summer which helps to keep me fit and toned. This is something that was noticed by Elite London and I believe has contributed to my success.
RB: I think the secret to success is first and foremost is to be yourself. Don’t try to be someone who you think casting directors and agents want to see because pretending might get you there but being yourself will keep you there. Also, I believe that success comes from having the drive and the passion to be in an industry that can be both cut throat and very rewarding at the same time. You really have to develop thick skin to be able to take the criticism and allow it to help you improve. I was told that there’s no such thing as failure, only feedback so the key is to take everything like a grain of salt. Also research is key. Knowing photographers, designers, magazine editors, models, agencies etc will allow you to catch the interests of those who are in position to book you and will also make you stand out from other models who are all vying for the same spots.
No longer do models only have to impress casting directors. Nowadays the people behind the scenes are having more power when it comes to choosing models for different jobs so it is important to have a positive attitude and be someone who people will enjoy working with.
