Sunken treasures, whale behaviour and shipwrecks are all part of the mix in a new Tuesday night Citizen Science Lecture Series.
Hosted by Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s Chairman, Jack Ward, the panellists include Teddy Tucker, Philippe Rouja, Andrew Stevenson, Judie Clee and Cherie Dam.
Ward moderates the panel discussions with leading local citizen scientists. He will explore what motivates them to participate in science, how they got involved, what projects they are working on, and what they have learned.
The lectures offer an opportunity to learn about issues currently being explored here on the island. This promises to be a fascinating evening and will provide an opportunity for the public to engage with our panellists.
The next lecture is on May 28 with Dr David Saul discussing Odyssey Marine Exploration and the hunt for modern day treasure. Odyssey’s recent salvage of $48m of silver ingots from 3 1/2miles down off the SW coast of Ireland was from a torpedoed British ship sunk by a U-Boat in 1942. This was the subject of several episodes on Discovery Channel.
Ward said: “BUEI was founded on Citizen Science — it is our foundation and our future.”
The lectures will take place at BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium every Tuesday from 7pm. Doors open at 6:30pm with a cash bar
Tickets are available from BUEI Gift Shop tel: 294-0204.
The lectures are $25 for non-members and $20 members.
There will be a special dinner menu afterwards at The Harbourfront for $39.75 (gratuities included) — an advance ticket is required.
The opening lecture is Tuesday, April 23.
