Kamau Leverock has secured a five-month placement at Sussex Premier League’s Horsham Cricket Club.
The link-up could also present the 18-year-old with chances to train with county side Sussex and at Lord’s with the MCC Young Cricketers squad, who are expected to net with England, New Zealand and Australia batsman this summer.
To enable this, Leverock, who made his debut for Bermuda aged just 16, was awarded a National Junior Athlete Sponsorship Scholarship at a ceremony at the Fairmont Hamilton on Thursday.
Horsham CC is a proven breeding ground for players with excellent facilities. The likes of David Hussey and Tim May — both Australia internationals — have played for the club.
National Coach David Moore said: "Kamau will be coached by some of the best coaches in the UK. Each coach will be ECB Level 4 qualified. These coaches are specialist coaches at county clubs including Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex as well as the MCC.
“He will also receive an individual strength and conditioning program as well as access to Christ Schools gymnasium. This facility is utilised by professional cricket and football teams. In addition, Kamau will receive opportunities to train (and possibly play) with Sussex CCC and receive coaching and bowl to the First Team. This exposure to international high performance preparation is an invaluable step to develop as an elite cricketer."
Moore continued in a press release: “Kamau will also have the opportunity to play for several representative teams such as the Duke of Norfolk's XI at Arundel Castle against First Class and touring teams.
“He has the opportunity to work with the MCC Young Cricketers squad and train regularly at Lords. Through this scholarship Kamau will work with international teams including England, Australia and New Zealand as a net bowler and will be able to test himself against the best batsmen in the world.
“Kamau has shown himself to be a young man of the highest integrity, morals and ethics. He has been found to play the game in the correct spirit, has a very high work and practice ethic and has demonstrated a desire and passion to perform at his best at all times. He is highly respected by team mates, opposition players, coaches and administrators of the game and is an excellent role model to our younger cricketers. I would like to congratulate Kamau on this achievement and I am sure that he will make the most of the opportunity."
President of the BCB, Lloyd Fray, said: “On behalf of the Board, I would like to congratulate Kamau on receiving this award.
“The BCB identified Kamau as a talented all-rounder who is currently in the UK studying where he played 2nd XI cricket for Sussex County Cricket Club. Kamau started in our National Academy U13 Squad at the age of nine and at the age of 12 captained the team that played in Barbados and Canada receiving awards for Most Wickets in ICC Americas Premier U15 Tournament and Man of the Match against Canada in the ICC Americas Premier U15 Tournament. At only 14 years of age Kamau was playing in the U19 National Team. He debuted for the senior team at age 16 in Dubai where he scored his first senior international half century against UAE. He gathered bowling figures of three3 for 13 against Cayman Islands in ICC Americas Division One game."
Fray added: "I would like to take this time to thank the Bermuda Government for their continued support of our young talented athletes and I look forward to following Kamaus progress over the course of the scholarship."
