Five-time gold medallist and Olympic legend Sir Steve Redgrave has vowed to hold on to his title of  2013 Hackers’ Cup champion.

The event features celebrities and journalists from the UK, who will play golf this week here in Bermuda.

The competition began today at the par-three Turtle Hill Golf Club at the Fairmont Southampton, with the purpose of the Hackers Cup to promote Bermuda as a tourist destination.

Before tee-off, Sir Steve, who won rowing gold in a remarkable five consecutive Olympics, was already looking forward to another  victory and said he was excited to be back in Bermuda.

“It hasn’t been that long,” said Redgrave, who arrived on the island late last night.

“I was here for the Hackers’ Cup 18 months ago. I hope to repeat my win with my sporting background.

“We don’t want to lose.”

Asked how he felt about visiting the island again, Sir Steve said: “It’s a fantastic place to come.

“Last time we toured around on little mopeds, which was really good fun.

“It’s a great way to see the island. I’m looking forward to seeing a little more.”

Asked how his golf is, Sir Steven said: “I went down to Port Royal this morning and hit a few balls so it was alright.

“I haven’t played all winter. It was good.

“It’s good to be back. I’m itching to get out there.”

Veteran British journalist Phillipa Kennedy was also teeing off at Turtle Hill.

She said: “I’ve done it before and I’m actually thrilled to be invited back.

“Bermuda is like stepping back in time, with the greatest respect.

“I think it's like stepping into a warm bath and I kind of feel like I could live here.”

She continued: “I love the slow pace of life. I like the charm of the people.

“Everybody you meet has a story from the driver, to the lady who does your room to the people in the restaurant.

“I think charm is the word.”

The Hacker’s Cup continues all week, with the field also playing Tucker’s Point on Wednesday and Port Royal on Thursday.
