Letter: Education standards are too poor to produce business tycoons

Two weeks ago the Bermuda Sun featured a column by Tom Vesey, Stop Pushing Our Young, Gifted And Black Into Trades. I believe it was written tongue-in-cheek but the subject needs to be addressed by the public.

OPINION

When did our island change from Jekyll to Hyde?

A disturbing trend is emerging — one that cannot lead to anything positive if allowed to fester and grow. This new trend involves guns — but not the gunplay and murders we unfortunately keep hearing about. It is the silent use of weapons in the pursuit of cold, hard cash …

Damage to tourism will take years to repair

Tourists’ experiences of a vacation in Bermuda have changed lately — and not necessarily for the better. All the hype about cruise ship arrival numbers, future hotels and the perpetually over-the-horizon “platinum period” only reminds us of how it used to be.

The revitalised waterfront will benefit city visually and economically

In the street and at town hall meetings, the consistent message is that the waterfront should not be over-built — it should be a blend of existing architectural treasures, interconnecting parks and compatible amenities where generous provision is made for outdoor activities.

Bermuda must ban driving while using a cellphone

More than 50 countries have imposed a ban or restrictions on using a cellphone while driving, especially regarding texting.

BDA is not a cult - we don't have to follow leaders blindly

Bermuda is a nation, not a cult. Characteristically, cults have strong leaders — usually men — who exercise almost magical powers over their followers.

Stop damning Gov't for finally listening to our wants

The big changes we need in Government — things like greater openness and sharing of power beyond the Cabinet — involve big changes in the way our leaders act. But they probably involve even bigger changes from us.

OPINION

Ministers' ugly racial attacks teach our youth bigotry

In response to questions about Government’s treatment of the Bermuda Cement Company, two Cabinet Ministers, according to news reports, made racially and ethnically derogatory comments in the House of Assembly last Friday.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Letter: NY office was never closed

The column written by Mr. Stuart Hayward and published in the June 11 Bermuda Sun contained several factual errors.

Reckless public spending leaves a long trail of victims

What do the following people have in common: Seniors who’ve had their pension benefits frozen by the Finance Minister; students who’ve been told by Senator David Burch that the Government is cutting back their summer jobs programme; teachers trying to raise money to cover Government cancellation of a $60,000 summer …

Government is now trapped in a debt vice

The government over-grew, over-spent, and over-borrowed. Now under-handedness has been added. The consequences of this combination of bad actions will be that Bermuda will suffer a prolonged economic recession.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Letter: Government must address economic gap between races

The real racial divide today is the economic disparity between the black and white community, with the black community suffering all the consequence of crime, violence, lack of housing and the disintegration of the family.

OPINION

Senator's complaints draw attention to Gov't's errors

Last week Senator Bean sent a letter to the Bermuda Sun about several “major factual errors” in a column I wrote on June 11. The first of these, he said, was that my statement that taxi drivers “had their dispatching company shut down” was not true.

Letter: Let's set the record straight on our departure from St. George's

Please allow me a small portion of your paper to set the record straight concerning comments made about Makin Waves in the ‘Special Report / East VS West fortunes’, appearing in the Bermuda Sun on Wednesday.

Voting along racial lines: our glaring double standard

The front page headline in the daily said it all: ‘PLP gets zero support from whites in survey’.
