GUN VIOLENCE SPECIAL REPORT

Viewpoint: Has the gun violence altered your daily routine?

With the recent escalation of gun violence - including Sunday's apparently random shooting at the Western Stars Sports Club - it might appear to some that no one is safe. The Bermuda Sun took the streets to ask people if the violence has caused them to alter their behaviour/routines.

Increase in Bermuda's population is partly to blame for soaring gun violence

Is this the Bermuda we all wished for? I doubt it. No one wants the island to be a place where young people are crippled and killed on our roads, failed in our schools, engaging in gang-like rivalries and resorting to gun violence.

Flying bullets prove the underclass is winning

By the time you read this, this year's bullet and body count may be even higher than the 55 bullets fired and three men killed when I wrote this column.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Letter: Our medical fees are regulated

The Bermuda Sun ran an article on March 26 in which you interviewed Dr. Jennifer Attride-Stirling, CEO of the Bermuda Health Council.

Drug barons, not gangs, are to blame for shootings

It is entirely possible the murders committed between December and April are drug-related. It is also entirely possible they are NOT gang-related. That is, it is not a war between 'Parkside' and '42'.

GUN VIOLENCE SPECIAL REPORT

Government and the Corporations must work together to tackle the gun violence and other social ills plaguing our beloved island home

Some weeks ago, I had a conversation with a former long serving MP, who asked me about the current status of Government to repeal or reform the Municipalities Act 1923.

Governor's silence on recent bloodshed is deafening

Have you ever wondered what deer caught in headlights look like? Seen any lately? I have. Think back to the ZBM evening news on Tuesday. I saw a whole Cabinet full of deer, looking desperate.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Letter: Voting yes to gaming is vital to save BDA's tourism industry

Bermuda has never been at a crossroads as critical as the one it faces now. The 30-year decline of tourism has caused many to forget what a great industry it once was for our island, her citizens and her visitors.

Economic boom won't continue... BDA faces tough times

Her death notice said she was 107. Mrs. Esther Allen Bentley was probably the last Bermudian who knew genuine hard times. Born in 1904, she would have experienced pre-1919 Bermuda, when folk were short of money.

Is a lonely, ageing hubby really so grubby?

Government has claimed women are being brought to Bermuda from the Dominican Republic to work as prostitutes. In the wake of this, I imagined what an encounter between an elderly Bermudian gent and his youthful mail order bride might be like.

Our reliance on foreigners is humiliating but essential

There may be something a little demeaning about running around the U.K. in pink Bermuda shorts or turning a famous London restaurant pink in an effort to boost tourism.

Senator Bean should 'man up' and apologise for his three unfounded attacks on BEST

In his attempt to denigrate myself and the Bermuda Environmental and Sustainability Taskforce (BEST), Senator Marc Bean took three bites of the proverbial cherry and was still unable to make his point clearly.

The community must oppose undemocratic takeover of Corporations

For as long as I can remember, I have participated in public service - from community projects to raising funds for various charities, to actively promoting social issues such as the mentoring of young persons.

Burch is right to hear Bermudian fears on term limits

Controversy aside, can we learn from Immigration Minister Colonel Burch's meeting with Bermudians in international business? The term limit policy arose to address fears surrounding the continued granting of long-term residency rights to non-Bermudians.

I'm proud to rely on foreigners for my good lifestyle

I am not sure why Tom Vesey, normally a very sensible commentator, should fall for the line that our reliance on foreigners is humiliating.
