Cameras keep an eye on Dockyard 24/7

Dockyard’s new network of CCTV cameras is now up and running.

A total of 28 cameras have been installed around Dockyard in a bid to boost security in the West End.

It is the first time that the popular destination for both locals and tourists has had a comprehensive CCTV network.

And it comes just before Police are due to move their Marine Section’s headquarters into the area.

We first reported on the cameras earlier this month.

Andrew Dias, WEDCo general manager told the Bermuda Sun: “There is still scope to increase the coverage to 30 cameras.

790 vehicles filmed

“But we are extremely pleased to have the network up in such a short period of time.

“On one of the first nights that the system was running 790 vehicles were recorded entering Dockyard between 4pm and 8am.

“This shows that the system works and captures the appropriate data.”

The system will provide 24-hour coverage and will be manned between 8am and 4pm seven days a week.

Cameras have been distributed around Dockyard as well as in the Clock Tower Mall and other ‘critical areas’.

WEDCo bosses are now looking at a further security addition that will see the lower road by the South Basin closed in the evening.

Mr Dias said: “This is just another security feature we are looking at establishing.

“It will mean that there is only one way in and out of Dockyard and that all vehicles will be monitored by the cameras.”

The project is the result of a new partnership between WEDCo and the security firm GET Security.

Under the one-year arrangement WEDCo will pay a nominal installation fee as well as a monthly maintenance charge.

The project will involve many of the recently decommissioned cameras, previously used by police, being re-installed within the Dockyard complex.
