A neighbourhood in Scaur has raised $900 for the Women’s Resource Centre through a community block party.
Some 44 members of the Scaur community turned out to the Soup Party in a tradition that stretches back years.
Executive director of the charity Patrice Frith Hayward gave a “clear and passionate” speech on the functions and needs of the centre. Her speech helped to captivated the minds and hearts of the folk who attended the party.
Scaur neighbor Roger Lambert told the Bermuda Sun: “My Scaur neighbourhood used to have a Block Party from the early 1990s up to about 2000. After it stopped my sister Betty and I were talking about the good times we all had then and we missed the camaraderie of the neighbours getting together.
“I said to my sister, ‘Let’s have a neighbourhood soup party after the New Year. We all make Soups from the ham and turkey anyway.
“The first Scaur soup party was held in January of 2002 at my residence in Scaur. It’s been held annually since then between January and March. In 2004 the Charity aspect came alive and in 2007, the first Scaur Charity salad party started.
“The event’s goal is to help keep the neighbourhood folk and friends socializing amongst each other. Think eating healthy (even if moderately, still a winner) and give some funds to a charity.”
The Women’s Resource Centre (WRC) is a non-profit charity providing assistance to victims of sexual assault and other women’s issues.
