A new dance school is offering those gifted in the arts to honour God.
The Anointed Steps Dance Ministry School held its grand opening last weekend. The event saw performances to highlight the school’s dance offerings, as well as honouring the school’s founder, Carmelita Millett, and introducing students to the school’s dance teachers.
The dance school will offer ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, hip hop, step, liturgical dance, mime, flags and African dance to children from the age of three as well as to adults.
Movement
While providing technical dance skills, the school will also provide spiritual lessons and guidance pertaining to dance and movement, according to a press release.
“Anointed Steps Dance Ministry School will provide teaching to churches that want to start dance ministries or who already have dance ministries but want to go to the next level. Anointed steps will train team leaders how to function at the best level possible,” the press release continued.
Mrs Millett added she hopes the school will help all those who come through the doors to “have an experience that will change their lives forever”.
She said the motto of the school is, “Not just learning to dance…But learning to dance under the anointing!”
Mrs Millett, who is an assistant vice president at Butterfield Bank, explained that the impetus for the school was based on a life-long love for dance.
She began taking dance classes at the age of 16 at the Jackson School of Performing Arts.
During that time she said her dance teacher told her that she was a clumsy dancer and so she was determined to work hard and prove that she could be a dancer.
In 1985 and 1986, she was selected as one of eight Bermuda dancers, called Follies, for the Greg Thompson Show Bermuda is Another World.
In 1998, Mrs Millett said she realized that her calling from God was her gift for dance.
She is currently the team leader in the dance ministry at the New Creation Worship Centre.
Mrs Millett said she is guided by one of her favourite scriptures, Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy path.
Registration for the school continues this week with classes beginning on Monday. For more information, contact the school’s office at 292-2014.
