This week’s high winds resulted in scattered power outages across the Island, including outages caused by foliage coming into contact with overhead lines. As vegetation is especially lush this spring, Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO) wishes to remind property owners that now is the time to trim trees and other foliage, so that they are at least 10 feet away from overhead lines. Please don’t wait until hurricane season starts on 1st June to trim your trees.
If foliage is dangerously close to overhead lines, please call BELCO a week or more in advance of your scheduled landscaping (three weeks is preferable). BELCO will arrange for a planned power outage, so that your landscapers can work safely. Please note: Property owners are responsible for foliage on their property.
BELCO is responsible for foliage along mainline circuits (which roughly equate to main roads). BELCO contracts with certified horticultural professionals Brown and Company Ltd., year-round to maintain vegetation along mainline circuits Island-wide.
