A young Bermudian talent is emerging on the waters of South Africa.
Christopher Mewett 15, is a student at Diocesan College (Bishops) in Cape Town and recently won gold in the eight and silver in the quad at the South African Schools Rowing Championships in Pretoria. He also came fourth in the pairs race.
The brother of former Olympic swimmer Geri Mewett, Christopher started rowing at the end of 2012 when he began high school. His dedication, he trains six days a week and competes regular in regattas around the Western Cape, is now reaping dividends.
He was recently invited for trials to represent South Africa and was successful, meaning he will now travel to Ghent, Belgium, in May as of the South Africa Junior Development team.
His mom Lorraine Mewett told the Bermuda Sun: “The rowing club in the school is small in comparison to the schools in Johannesburg but in his age group they have had tremendous success over the last two years. “
She added: “[The school] also entered a major regatta on the Eastern Cape where in February this year he won gold in the pair and silver in the 8.
“He obviously would love to row in the future for Bermuda but only certain countries are invited to row in the Olympics and Bermuda is not one of them!”
