Fashions houses such as Givenchy, Stella McCartney, Lanvin, Christian Dior and Balmain sent their models down the runaway wearing trendy clothing this week during Paris Fashion Week.
But one designer did something very different. Karl Lagerfeld, head designer for Chanel, turned the Grand Palais into a spoof Chanel grocery store to showcase his Fall/Winter collection. The space was filled with endless rows of pasta, cheese, sauces and detergent — all branded with Chanel.
And the clothes were rather interesting as well; models were dressed in ratty sweatpants and tops with bright colours and flashy sneakers.
Pop art
According to the Chicago Tribune, Lagerfeld, pictured, said after the show: “For me the supermarket is the pop art of today.
“It is not because you buy Chanel clothes that you should not be allowed into the supermarket.”
He also admitted he rarely entered supermarkets.
During the show, models pushed brightly-coloured shopping carts and picked up products with tongue-in-cheek labels such as Coco beer bottles, Chateau Gabrielle white wine and Chanel milk.
Others carried metallic baskets adorned with Chanel’s iconic handbag chains.
This is absolutely hilarious to me. Uncle Karl, as he’s known, clearly has no idea that supermarkets are not fashionable and certainly are not art. Maybe he’s trolling everyone to convince the masses that ratty sweatpants are fashionable. Er, no, honey. n
