Ellen’s Oscar selfie sets a Twitter retweet record

Ellen DeGeneres showed what star power could do as her selfie at the Oscars broke Twitter.

Her selfie included Jared Leto, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Lupita Nyong’o, Peter Nyong’o, Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Bradley Cooper and Kevin Spacey. 

It was retweeted more than two million times in two hours and broke the previous retweet record in less than 40 minutes.

The previous record?

It was held by President Barack Obama and showed him hugging his wife Michelle. That was retweeted 791,000 on the night of his re-election in November 2012. 

DeGeneres had set the goal of breaking president Obama’s record after she had the photo snapped by Bradley Cooper. 

She asked for people to get in the photo and stars scrambled to the aisle in what is being called “The selfie of the century”.
