Callon Burns and the Coconut Rockets made a huge splash at the 2014 North American Flyboarding Championships, not only finishing on the podium but also getting the green light to host future World Cups in Bermuda.
“Everything we wanted to achieve in Toronto, we surpassed,” Coconut Rockets owner Michael Swan told the Bermuda Sun.
Burns, dubbed “Afterburner” by the other flyers for his aggressive, active style, had an impressive run, coming in as a relative unknown with a unique style and blowing away viewers and competitors alike on his way to a third-place finish.
He said: “Everyone has the intention of winning when they compete, but initially going out there, I thought, if I get a top 16 against some of these tough guys, I’m happy. For us to go out there and wipe the field and come out third feels amazing.”
Swan added that while the World Cup is slated to be held in Costa Rica this year, logistical issues may push the event to Bermuda as soon as this November.
“This sport is brand new, ground floor, and it’s going to be a huge deal. What the Coconut Rockets want for Bermuda is for Bermuda to own flyboarding. We want this to be the place to come for flyboarding.
“Logistically we need sponsorship, new engines, and a deal on hotel rooms. The World Cup is typically held in November, and once we get it once, we can hold on to it. We can have everything dialled in as far as location and beautiful scenery. It also comes during the offseason, so it will be great for tourism.”
