Most of the teams were hampered by "light air' in the first night of the race after leaving Newport yesterday.
But Shockwave became the first team to break free of the field at around 9am this morning with still another 470 miles to go until Bermuda.
Meanwhile on IRC scoring or corrected time; Dorade is at the top of the tree followed by Corina and Money Penny.
Earlier today race commentator Dobbs Davis: "It may have been a long night for a lot of the teams; it was pretty slow going getting out
"Right now the lead boat, closest to Bermuda, is Shockwave, they are going 9.8 knots which is a heck of a lot better than they were going a few hours ago.
"In the early hours of today boats were caught up in a lot of light air. It looks like Shockwave has recently just broke free."
The Newport to Bermuda Race started in Newport, Rhode Island on Friday, June 20 and finishes off St. David’s Lighthouse.
