The Chewstick Foundation has chosen to commemorate the late Dr Maya Angelou with a mural at its headquarters on Court Street.
The mural of the author, poet, dancer and singer will replace the current one of the late Nelson Mandela and the public is invited to write one last message before it is removed.
Dr Angelou was chosen due to ‘her contributions to the creative community and humanity at large’.
Chewstick Community Art Programme also invites the public to help to determine the best way to celebrate Dr Angelou.
By visiting the Chewstick Facebook page you can provide feedback on the mural design and help to determine which poems and quotes should be associated with its subject.
Community Arts Programme director Tiago Garcia said: “We want to help build relationships between visual artists and building owners. Investing in public art and building exterior beautification projects is a great way to support local visual artists and also helps create new shared experiences for both locals and guests.
“The Chewstick Foundation has done a great job enhancing their surrounding area in the City of Hamilton — however, we now want to explore island-wide public art projects. It helps to have talented artists… available to paint.”
