Saracens defeated Bermuda Barbarians 48-14 to win the World Wide Currencies Atlantic Cup at the National Stadium tonight.

A large crowd turned out to see Saracens, fresh off losses in both the Aviva Premiership title game and the Heineken Cup final, demolish Bermuda Barbarians, a squad comprised of selected players from Britain, as well as Roedolf van der Westhuizen, who serves as Bermuda’s rugby coach.

After the match, Saracens captain Jamie George said, “It’s always pretty challenging coming against a Barbarians team they always throw the ball around a bit, our defence has to be good, but we came away with a trophy so everything’s good.”

He added, “It was a sort of end of season getaway, but at the same time it was a great opportunity to come over here and see what young rugby is doing here in Bermuda. It’s great for us to come over here and do some school visits, check out the development of Bermudian rugby. It’s a great honour to be over here.”

Dean Schofield, who plays lock for Bermuda Barbarians, assessed the match thusly: “It was amazing. We had a great time. We enjoyed it. I thought it was played in good spirits both sides.  There was a good turnout and we gave them a good day, I think. We kept the ball in play and we threw the ball around.”
