Statement by Shadow Environment Minister Glenn Blakeney
The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party joins with people across the globe in observing World Environment Day 2014. This year's focus "Small Islands and Climate Change," is particularly relevant for Bermuda as Global Warming and the accompanying rising sea levels pose a real threat to Bermudian safety and quality of life. With our limited land area and small elevation, even minor rises in sea level would dramatically impact on our island home and irrevocably change Bermuda for the worst.
To mark World Environment Day, the PLP proposes that Bermudians come together and support the full Implementation of the PLP's Bermuda Energy White Paper; a blueprint for reducing fossil fuel dependency, establishing greater energy security, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions below ten tonnes per person by 2020. We must also begin to work towards establishing food security with looming threats to global food supplies and production.
This is an issue that all Bermudians can support; preserving our quality of life, building a better environment and securing food and energy security for all.
