Sun closure: End of an era

Author Esmeralda Santiago once said: “How can you know what you are capable of if you don’t embrace the unknown?”

Such a poignant quote at a time like this. This time last week, I was going through my lists of assignments with Tony, and now, a week later, we have reached the end of an era. 

We’ve all heard the saying a million times, when one door closes, another one opens. Whenever I heard it, I used to think: “Yeah, right”, but this time something is different.

Although my heart is heavy that the Bermuda Sun has met its end, I am excited about the possibilities which lie ahead.

I see a chance to whip out my paintbrush of life and colour everything as brightly as I can. Makes no sense wallowing in what was, and what could have been and instead embrace what can be.

I’m a media veteran

At this point in my career, I’m considered a veteran. I’ve worked in print, electronic, and as a Government Public Affairs Officer. There were two organizations I’ve never worked for and the Bermuda Sun was one of them —until this May. 

When the opportunity presented itself , I jumped at it, figuring I had nothing to lose. From the day I walked in the door, I knew I was at home. While I knew a few of the staff casually, in a short time, I was “one of them”.

I’d always heard that this was a great place to work but there are no words to describe how happy I have been the last two months. In this industry, there is a constant grind, but this is a company that took the time to say “A job well done”.

This is a field that can easily drain you emotionally and physically, so a little gratitude goes a long way. It will always be relished. And it was appreciated.

To my colleagues in the newsroom, I would like to thank you for embracing me in such a short period of time. Simon still has never bought me a cup of coffee, but hey, I forgive him. Sarah, Don and Danny, I’m going to miss seeing you every day. And to James, thanks for putting up with me. Can’t wait for when we open the picture in the time capsule (ha ha!). 

Tony, thank you for being a great editor. It was a pleasure to be a part of your team. I didn’t envision our working relationship ending so soon (or abruptly) but I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of each other. I wish I had come here sooner! 

To those of you who have allowed me to tell your stories, thank you for trusting me. It was an honour.

You have not heard the last of me.

Philosopher Alan Watts said:  “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”

Now, excuse me while I pick out my dance shoes.
