Bermuda has been in an economic slump for the past five years. Money for many charities slowed to a crawl, but for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda, they could always count on Bermuda CableVision coming through for them.

For the fifth year in a row CableVision has given a $1,000 donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda.

The funds come through the generosity of the Caribbean Cable and Telecommunications Association’s Community Charities (CCTA) Programme.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Bermuda was nominated for the grant by Bermuda CableVision, a member of the CCTA and the cable and telecommunications provider for Bermuda.

The charity was chosen as a grant recipient because of the outstanding service and assistance it provides to the community.

Patrina O’Connor-Paynter, fund development/marketing communications director, BBBS, said: “We are delighted to receive this donation from Bermuda CableVision and the CCTA. In these tough economic times, every dollar helps. We are grateful to Bermuda CableVision for supporting our programme.”

Edward Cherwinski, chief financial officer, Bermuda CableVision, said: “We were pleased to be able to nominate BBBS for this grant. We support their programme and believe their work in the community is beneficial. We are happy that these funds will go towards continuing their excellent work and future programmes.”

The CCTA’s Community Charities Program, established in 1993, has awarded more than $292,000 to Caribbean charities since conception. The program originally awarded only ten grants per year, but interest in the programme has grown in the last 20 years.

Eleven charities were nominated for the 2014 grants, and the association’s board of directors voted unanimously to award $1,000 grants to all.
