Home for new business expands

A home for start-ups and small businesses is expanding – taking the lease on a two-story office space in Hamilton.

nineteen already has office space on Queen Street, but that is full and now owner Tim Miller has signed a deal to take over two floors of offices on Burnaby Street.

Mr Miller said: “When I started the nineteen concept, I was not sure what to expect. It was a bit of a social experiment as a well as a business idea. But it has worked very well and the level of camaraderie and co-operation has been phenomenal.”

The nineteen concept allows a person to rent a desk or a small office within an overall office complex. The nineteen space on Queen Street is home to six businesses ranging from dry walling to brokers.

Rent includes internet access, printing, faxing, photocopying, cleaning, use of a kitchen, use a conference room, and all furniture is supplied.

The new space on Burnaby Street will operate in the same way. It is also much larger and able to accommodate businesses ranging in size from sole proprietors to SMEs.

“I have noticed, or read about, a lot of small businesses opening in Bermuda whether it is coffee shops or small hedge funds. I believe that concepts like nineteen can help nurture new start-ups, it a space that acts almost like a small business incubator.

“In the short space of time nineteen has existed, I have seen business based there doing very well indeed and the level of entrepreneurship is outstanding.”
