Coco Reef hopes to reel in a local crowd with the introduction of a new Island Buffet on Tuesday nights and a Summer BBQ on Thursday nights.
I was invited by the hotel to attend the Island Buffet recently ago for review.
It’s great to see the hotel promoting all things Bermudian by serving traditional island fare with a few extra food options thrown in for good measure.
As far as the setting — you walk into the glitzy hotel entrance, through a quaint, Mediterranean- style restaurant area and out on to the large balcony area. You can’t beat the view overlooking the pool and the south shore.
When we attended, the majority of the 20 or so guests we saw were tourists staying at the hotel but it’s hoped that as the word gets out, it will attract more Bermudians and residents.
Giving the event a Bermudian feel was a steel pan player performing island- style music and plenty of Bob Marley. It would have been nice if he was closer to the guests but he was placed at the far end of the balcony on his own and so the music served more as background than any main event. Still, its great to see some traditional entertainment.
As for the food, you can easily get your money’s worth by making your way through three or four courses. You can start with the salad bar (coleslaw, Caesar and tomato and basil options) followed by a hearty Bermuda Fish Chowder.
Main course offerings included a full-baked snapper dressed in lemon slices and fresh herbs, my personal favourite for the night, beef stir-fry, chicken drumsticks, macaroni and cheese, soy rice and peas, roast potatoes and garlic Mediterranean vegetables,
There was a nice little selection of desserts on offer including a delicious chocolate brownie, lashings of fruit, some pretty petits fours and a peanut butter mouse.
The buffet doesn’t have anywhere near the variety of options you might get at the Waterlot brunch which is only slightly more expensive, but this location does have the advantage of a beautiful ocean view of south shore as well as the light entertainment.
The Island Buffet on Tuesdays and Summer BBQ on Thursdays are $43 per person each and run from 7pm to 9pm.
Guests must pay for the Buffet/BBQ in order to enter the balcony area.
