A St George’s man who admitted using his brother’s MasterCard to place $18,000 in bets was today jailed for six months.
David Robinson, 26 initially pleaded not guilty to 37 counts of placing bets at Seahorses Betting Shop between January and March 2013 by using Nathan Robinson’s Butterfield Bank MasterCard when not authorized to do.
Today, the defendant pleaded guilty to four of those charges. Crown counsel Cindy Clarke asked that the other charges lie on file.
She told the court Nathan Robinson went to make an online purchase on March 8 with his credit card but it was declined.
When he called the bank, he was notified that a number of transactions had been made a Seahorses Betting Shop totally $18,100.
The complainant went to Seahorses to speak with the manager and saw his brother there.
Nathan Robinson reported the matter to police and his brother was arrested. During an interview, he admitted stealing the card from the home they shared and making bets with it.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said: “I don’t know if a gambling addiction drove him to commit these offences. He’s a thief.
“Simply put, he thinks he can do what he wants and take people’s property.”
Meanwhile, David Robinson was also sentenced for two other matters.
In October, he admitted vandalizing his father’s car after he refused to give him money.
Finally, the defendant was sentenced for entering Clearview Guesthouse as a trespasser and stealing keys on October 1. He admitted putting a $5,988 refund onto his credit card at Clearview on the same date.
Mr Warner sentenced the defendant to six months in prison from October 7 when he first appeared in court.
