It’s not quite the kid in the candy store analogy, but going to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is very techie’s dream.
Todd Martin, P-Tech general manager, was one of a handful of Bermudians who attended the show.
This was the second year Mr Martin and Phoenix Stores CEO George Grundmuller attend the gadget fest.
Mr Martin said: “The big thing right now is the curved TV from Samsung and LG. Last year it was the 3D TV, but this year it’s the curved ultra or 4K TVs. You control the curve of the TV screen with a remote — which is interesting.
“It gives you a much better viewing angle and you get less reflection off the screen.”
Smartwatches
He said another big trend at the show was the smartwatch.
“Everyone seems to be trying to get into that. I see it as more of a fad. All it really is, is a gadget. It just prevents you from having to reach into your pocket for your phone. It does everything that your phone does.”
He said many people have jumped on the smartwatch bandwagon and synching it with various devices.
Mr Martin said that seemed to be at odds with the phones getting bigger and bigger screens, then having people be able to access it through a small smartwatch screen.
“This is curious as to which way it will actually go.”
He said another trend from CES was the number of companies making battery packs for smartphones and mobile devices.
“Everybody has one; everybody’s pushing it.”
He said the show seemed overwhelmed with accessories for people’s phones.
Mr Martin added two other big items were variations on LED lights and apps for mobile devices.
