We are all familiar with the idyllic sun drenched beach scenes of Bermuda — the jewel of the Atlantic.
But an upcoming photographic exhibition by newly-engaged couple Mark Tatem and Ally Lusher, aims to show a local’s perspective of the island, specifically St George’s.
The show is described as: “Essentially a subconscious exploration of St George’s from a local’s perspective — Bermudiana for the Bermudian if you will.”
Tatem told the Bermuda Sun: “With this show we are aiming to capture the whimsy, charm and originality of day to day life in St George’s, mixing the old with the new through the use of not only modern
photographic technology but in the installation of the show itself.”
Both Lusher and Tatem trained in film and are still ‘traditionalists at heart’. Through the show’s digital images, their approach has been similar to how they work in a darkroom.
“These images reflect our ‘Old Towne’ lifestyle as well as our approach to fine art photography,” said Lusher.
“Our mantra is to let a photo be a photo; to focus on the subject and a
vision rather than on digital manipulation. Any effects in our images are created through the use of specialty lenses in camera as we shoot rather than on the computer in post-production.”
Eastern Exposure is the couple’s first “solo” show, as they call it, since returning to the island.
Tatem has been back since graduating from Brock University with a BA Honours Visual Art in 2006 and Lusher, since graduating from Savannah College of Art & Design with a BFA Photography in 2008.
The photographers have entered various members’ and group shows island wide before now. They plan to continue their project in working towards their next book with an intended release in 2016. Their freelance venture, Two + Quarter Studios, published Generations Apart, N.E. Lusher Revisited in 2012.
The show opens tonight at 5pm at BSoA.
