A 44-year-old man was today given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay restitution after he admitted stealing a portable DVD player.
Alexander Christopher went into PriceRite on December 30 and was seen acting suspiciously by the manager.
Christopher then moved from the sight of the manager and exited the store.
The manager went to the area he saw Christopher going and saw a Sony portable DVD player was missing.
CCTV footage showed the defendant removing the DVD player and putting it inside a plastic bag before leaving the store.
The matter was reported to police who identified Christopher on the footage.
He was arrested and during an interview told officers he sold the DVD player to a “Portuguese”.
Addressing the court, Christopher said: “I haven’t been in trouble in a long time. I’m working. I went back to speak to the manager and ask if it’s possible I can repay the DVD player.
“I feel very remorseful about it.”
But Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said: “You’re working, why do you continue to steal?”
Christopher said he had been laid off and this was his first offence in two years.
Mr Warner sentenced the defendant to six months imprisonment suspended for two years.
He must also pay $172 restitution for the DVD player by January 20.
