Chewstick anniversary show a testament to Bermuda's talent
Chewstick presented an excellent line-up of entertainment on the first night of its 11th anniversary celebrations last night.
The Premier and Governor were both in attendance with their wives at the event held in the Earl Cameron Theatre, City Hall.
Among the stand out performances was Raven Baksh performing a couple of semi-acoustic originals – vaguely comparable to Lorde, she has a unique, confident style. I heard one in the audience say, “that is Bermuda’s next star right there”, and I fully agreed.
R?ddla, with Amora Rose and the DIA Band (Derek G Simmons, Milton Raposo, Scarlet Thomas and, standing in for Kofi, Jorge Suarez) performed an electric set of hip hop tunes and a reggae tunes including a blinding rendition of Champion Lover.
Jo-1 (aka Joanne Ball-Burgess) brought the stage alive with her dance track Chiziqa which is number one in her home city Nairobi where she currently lives. She was caught up in the Westgate Mall shootout in September. She told the audience that she didn’t know whether she would make it out alive but at least she had completed the song and it would be shared with the world.
The youngest to take to the stage was 10-year-old X’achela Robinson who wowed the crowd with her tribute to the late Nelson Mandela.
It would have been nice to see more people come out to celebrate Chewstick and the incredible service it pays to our young creatives.
Tonight there is another opportunity to do so. There will be more entertainment this evening from 8pm at the Earl Cameron Theatre (reception from 7pm). The line-up includes David O’Shea, G-Man & The Doc (Graham Pewter and Neil Burnie), Canjalae, The Simons Brothers Band, Scotty Spectak and Amora Rose.
The same as Friday’s show, there will be a performance from the Bermuda African Dance Company to open, an introduction by Haile Maryam, and poetry by Kevina-Lorae Davis, Matthew Johnstone, Tiffany Paynter and Yesha Townsend.
Youth groups TWIGS and ChewSlam will also perform as well as Amora Rose with the DIA Band.
