One of the most important things in the natural hair world is figuring out what your hair type is.
A year ago, I had no idea that there were hair types other than straight, wavy, curly, kinky or even what some people refer to as nappy.
I just washed/styled my hair and went about my business.
But one day, I found a website called curlynikki.com and my world changed, at least as it relates to my hair.
There was a wealth of information about hair types, products, styles and so much more that I was completely overwhelmed. But once I narrowed in on various subjects, I was able to find what I was looking for.
I find that many naturals in Bermuda have been natural their whole lives and have been told they have “pretty hair”.
I fit into that category and never made an effort when it came to my hair, aside from cutting and colouring.
This is where Curly Nikki came in. Once I went on the site, I learned about my hair type and tons more info.
So let’s start from the beginning. Hair types are broken up into three categories — 2/wavy, 3/curly and 4/coily.
Each category has a number so there is 2a, 2b, 2c and then 3a, 3b, 3c and finally 4a, 4b and 4c.
Now not everyone’s hair fits exactly into a category. My hair is very curly and is probably between 3b and 3c.
Technically, I should be 3c but the photo depicting what 3c hair is looks nothing like mine so I say I’m in between but leaning more towards 3c rather than 3b.
For me, because I’m kind of in between hair types, the best thing to do was find a celebrity who has 3b or 3c hair and see which one I identify with.
Tracee Ellis Ross has 3c hair and my hair is very similar in texture to hers so I guess I’m really a 3c but parts of my hair definitely are 3b.
If you are unsure about what hair type you are or you never even thought about it, check out Curly Nikki and have fun researching.
