A 24-year-old man today admitted stealing credit cards belonging to Senator James Jardine and racking up more than $12,000 in goods.
Malik Cann of no fixed abode pleaded guilty to 26 counts relating to the stolen credit cards in Magistrates’ Court this morning.
He pleaded guilty to stealing two Butterfield Bank Visa credit cards on February 13. Cann also pleaded guilty to dishonestly using the credit cards and obtaining goods.
A further 23 counts were taken into consideration.
Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court Mr Jardine went to the Hamilton Police Station on February 18 to make a report about two stolen credit cards.
The court heard it was discovered the cards were used between February 13 and 18 at various places across the island.
When officers began investigating, they were able to identify Cann as the suspect by CCTV footage and signed receipts.
The stores he visited included Gem Cellar, MatchBox in Washington Mall, People’s Pharmacy, WJ Boyles, Court Street Liquors, Wok Express, Game Time, Pizza House, Fish and Tings, Down to Earth and more.
When Cann visited SwissTiming, he attempted to make a purchase of $5,500 but the card was declined.
The total amount on both credit cards was $12,755.43. This total does not include the charges that were taken into consideration.
Cann was arrested on February 21 and admitted the offences in a police. Ms Clarke told the court he has 21 convictions for dishonesty offences from 2007 to 2013.
Cann was also on bail for another matter at the time of the offence.
He was remanded into custody and will be sentenced at a later date.
