A man was arrested outside of Lindo’s in Devonshire Wednesday night.

The drama unfolded on Brighton Hill around 6pm as a store manager held a man down in the middle of the street until the police arrived.

According to police, the 41-year-old Southampton man “was acting suspiciously around female shoppers. The suspect was confronted by a male store manager outside the premises and arrested by police after a brief altercation with that manager.

“There were no reported injuries.”

Before the police arrived the Southampton man pleaded to the manager to loosen his hold and he promised he wouldn’t run.

He yelled: “I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!”

The police arrived shortly afterwards with an unmarked car and two patrol cars.

There was a quick search of the street for an unknown object.

The police handcuffed the man and took him away.

The commotion caused traffic on Brighton Hill to back up as many people were headed to the store for the 10 per cent discount.

Police added:  “Inquiries into this incident are ongoing and any witnesses, particularly persons that were at Lindo’s Market around 6pm Wednesday, are encouraged to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 247-1744.”
