Friends of Hospice was founded in 1994 to provide financial assistance and volunteer services to Agape House, Bermuda’s first and only in-patient hospice.
The company ran the challenge over four weeks from March 10 to April 6 and set up teams of participants including employees from its Bermuda and London offices. Some 56 people competed in total.
Through the website www.dailyendorphin.com, participants could log their daily activities and it issued them points based on exercise and intensity levels.
There would be a new overall individual winner each week as well as a team winner based on those points. A weekly “fitness question” enabled them to earn extra points, which helped to educate them on healthy lifestyles. Total calories burned during the 4 weeks was 658,750 — an average of 2,900 calories per week per participant.
Each participant had to donate a minimum of $15 and with company matching Ariel raised the $1,320, which will be donated to The Friends of Hospice. They will be presenting the check at Ariel’s office on Friday, May 2, at 9:30am.
Vendors chipped donating prizes — Court House gym gave each individual weekly winner a free Court House gym towel as well as a free “Sessions” class with the final overall winning team each individually receiving the same.
Better Health gave the weekly team winners 50 per cent discounts on smoothies for an entire week.
Java Jive donated free coffees and the overall individual prize was a 30-minute massage donated by Advanced Chiropractic Wellness Centre.
Court House also donated their spin room for the company to participate in an “Ariel Re only” spin class and they also held a Cross Fit class in Victoria Park one lunchtime.
The final weekend of the challenge coincided with the Bermuda Triple Challenge and many employees also participated in that. They celebrated at the end with a breakfast and “Certificate of Survival” presentations.
The challenge was organized by Ariel employees Tina Rego and Jason Correia. Rego is a I Certified Personal Trainer as well as a Spin instructor and Cross Fit Level 1 Trainer while Correia is one of the organizers of the Bermuda Triple Challenge.
Rego said: “For me as a trainer it was inspiring to see everyone getting involved in working out and friendly competition was evident.
“Many of the people who were not regular exercisers have now stuck to their exercise routine, continuing to work out on a regular basis even after the challenge finished.
Many of the participants had never been to a spin class or done a Cross Fit class but they came out to give it a try. “Everyone who participated is looking forward to the next one.”
