BELCO urges owners to control dogs
In the interest of worker safety, Bermuda Electric Light Company (BELCO) is calling on dog owners to ensure that animals are properly controlled. The request is being made during the company’s observance of “Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Week”.
For many of Bermuda’s workers, including BELCO meter readers and line workers, the workplace is the community at large. Workers who must access properties across the Island in order to do their jobs may be exposed to personal risk and injury, including attacks by unsecured or inadequately secured dogs. In recent weeks, BELCO workers have been involved in two such incidents.
Under Bermuda law, owners may be subject to fines or other penalties for failure to ensure that dogs are properly secured at all times. BELCO takes worker safety seriously and thanks dog owners for acting responsibly to ensure that dogs do not pose a threat to workers and the public.
BELCO’s “Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Week”, 28 April-2 May, promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases, while focusing attention on the scope and magnitude of work-related injuries, diseases and fatalities worldwide.
