A new art show around the theme of architecture and nature opens at the Bermuda Society of Arts this evening.
The featured artist is Dominic Paiva, the fourth generation of a family of builders, craftsmen and engineers. Implicit in this are the disciplines of art and design.
A constant and reoccurring theme in his work is that of the relationship between man-made and natural.
Various works, shows and even his degree thesis have explored this theme, with Paiva having received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2010. For the show, titled DesignWorks, which opens tonight from 5pm to 7pm, Paiva translated his sketches and designs into an electronic medium, given dimension and proportion, colour and stylization, then made as prints.
Paiva told the Bermuda Sun: “There is definitely a connection between art and architecture in my work. Many of the fundamental principles of design, proportion, form and aesthetics are shared... no matter what medium, I always approach the work with the same philosophy that encompasses these principles and others.” Dominic works in various creative mediums including, sculpture, architecture, drawing and painting.
There will be 14 pieces on display at the exhibition. Paiva has previously exhibited his works at the BSoA, the Art Centre at Dockyard and galleries in Providence, R.I. using the same theme.
