Pastel as a verb means to produce an artwork with pastels; as an adjective it means pale in colour. Pastels have been used by artist since the Renaissance and gained considerable popularity in the 18th century, when a number of artists made pastel their primary medium.

Now, in the 21st Century, pastel colours for hairstylists have been reborn and are cultivating rapidly as an ongoing trend using hair as their pastel.

As spring is here and summer is upon us, the pastel colours will start to brace the shop windows in fashion and the makeup counters in cosmetic stores. Pink, lilac, apricot, sky blue, mint, and egg yellow are just a few some of the celebrities like Kelly Osbourne, Fearne Cotton and Ellie Gouliding are sporting and have been for quite some time now. These tones are suitable for paler cooler skin tones; however any skin type as a fashion statement or a novelty can chance pastels to be bold and daring.

The best ways to achieve flamboyant pastels is to use on pre-lightened hair (done by a professional) or use on naturally light or blonde hair. They can be used to be bold all over, spice up ombre, clients that wish to be festive, block colouring or to accentuate a segment of a haircut. As pastels come in temporary, semi or demi form they can be used as a smart tool to have a crack at colour placement with minimum commitment allowing the client to change frequently — think of it as hair makeup.

Keeping the pastels softer will lend a hand in retaining a young fresh laid back look for spring and summer — great for the clients who thrive on fresh change while remaining practical but current. As pastels are minimum commitment, they are susceptible to fade fast, which means clients, should visit the salon often to keep their colour fresh and visible. Keeping the hair well treated with deep conditioners will also assist in gaining maximum results out of your pastels.

Remember — what would a fabulous colour be without a smashing haircut, so when you call into your salon in search of pastel shades, don’t forget a haircut or trim as well!
