A man who fatally stabbed a young electrician during a fight outside Bailey's Bay Cricket Club has been jailed for six years.

Adam Leroy King was armed with a knife when he was attacked by Verneil Richardson outside the club in the early hours of June 20.

Today the Supreme Court heard that King, 34, had tried to leave the club when he realised Mr Richardson and his friends were present.

Mr Richardson confronted King in the car park and smashed a bottle against King's head.

A violent scuffle then followed in which Mr Richardson, 22, was stabbed twice by King.

Mr Richardson was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries.

King's lawyer, Craig Attridge, told the court that his client had brought a knife to the scene for his own protection.

And he said that King would never have gone to the club on the night of the killing if he had known that Mr Richardson and his friends had been there.

No details of the background to the incident were provided in court today.

When asked if he had anything to say during the sentencing hearing this afternoon King apologized to the victims family who were in court.

Looking visibly emotional he said: "I just want to apologise. I never meant for this to happen.

"I can not change what happened that night. I just hope you know you have my apologies."

King had previously admitted the manslaughter of Mr Richardson.
